Caterina and Maria de’ Medici: women in power
[ October 28, 2008 to February 8, 2009. ] Two Medici queens of France, 15 monumental tapestries to justify their power
| October 28, 2008 | to | February 8, 2009 |
Palazzo Strozzi exhibition shows how the power of imagery was used by the two Medici queens of France, Caterina and Maria de’ Medici, to legitimize their reign in a time when women in such positions were uncommon.
15 monumental tapestries, commissioned by Caterina in the mid-16th century and completed by Maria, tell the story of Artemisia of Caria. Artemisia was the widow of the Persian ruler Mausolus, and ruled after his death conquering the island of Rhodes.
A successful reign, translated in 15 powerful images to justify the political power of the two Medici queens.
